A coach containing 25 children had a narrow escape after an iron bar was thrown at it on a motorway.
Police confirmed the bus, which also contained eight adults, was struck with the bar thrown from Bellevue Bridge near Glengormley on the outskirts of north Belfast last night at around 8.15pm.
The iron bar landed on reinforced glass on the front windscreen of the coach and the driver was able to keep control of the vehicle.
A Northern Ireland police spokeswoman said the incident ‘‘could have been very serious’’.
The incident followed another on Saturday where a 56-year-old midwife sustained a shattered left shoulder when a boulder was hurled from a bridge through the windscreen of her car as she drove down the same M2 motorway.
The woman was today reported to be in a ‘‘stable condition’’ in hospital.
Police said the woman was lucky not to have been killed.
Her car smashed into the central reservation before coming to a halt on the hard shoulder.
Two youths are being questioned in connection with the incident.
