A moderate earthquake centred in the Marmara Sea near Istanbul shook buildings in the Turkish city tonight. There were no immediate reports of any damage or casualties.

A moderate earthquake centred in the Marmara Sea near Istanbul shook buildings in the Turkish city tonight. There were no immediate reports of any damage or casualties.

The quake had a preliminary magnitude of 4.5.

Earthquakes are frequent in Turkey, much of which lies on top of the active North Anatolian fault. In 1999, two devastating quakes killed about 18,000 people in north-western Turkey.
