Swedish police evacuated buildings and blocked off streets in a northern Stockholm suburb today, while surrounding a man who claimed to have a remote-controlled bomb tied to his waist.

Witnesses reported seeing a man in the Tensta suburb who claimed to be wearing a bomb belt, police spokesman Stefan Larsson said. Police could not immediately verify whether it was a bomb. A bomb squad unit was at the scene, he said.

About 30 officers surrounded the man, who appeared to be in his 30s and said he was Norwegian, the spokesman said, without giving further details.

Some 100 residents were evacuated from nearby buildings, Larsson said.

Swedish media reported that the man was sitting on the ground and appeared calm. The Swedish TT news agency said he initially told police he had been kidnapped.

“He behaved in a weird way and just sat there crying,” said witness Jasser Mohammed Ali, who works at a nearby shop, according to TT. “He has something around his waist and in his hand.”
