Court orders closure of nursing home

The Rostrevor Nursing Home in Dublin has been ordered to close by a District Court in the capital.

The Rostrevor Nursing Home in Dublin has been ordered to close by a District Court in the capital.

It comes after a judge said he was satisfied that there had been a risk to the lives of elderly people there.

Earlier this month the Health Information and Quality Authority obtained an interim court order which effectively shut the Rathgar facility.

That interim order was this afternoon made final and permanent at Dublin District Court.

It comes after HIQA inspectors said they were concerned about "an alarming history of falls, injuries and incidents" at the home.

There were also allegations that five residents were beaten, kicked and abused by a male care assistant since mid-2008.

The controversry of elder abuse at the nursing home was sparked earlier this month, when two staff members at the home made the allegations.

Rostrevor's owners said they would not object to the order to close the home.
