A top British musical director and judge on the Canadian version of 'How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria?' has been charged with assault in Toronto.

Police confirmed today that conductor Simon Lee, 46, was arrested on Sunday night at his hotel.

A police spokesman said the arrest was made after a man in his 20s complained he was assaulted in a room and prevented from leaving.

Lee was personally selected to appear on 'How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria?' by Andrew Lloyd Webber.

Lee was conductor or music supervisor for a number of Lloyd Webber productions, including 'The Phantom of the Opera' and 'Jesus Christ Superstar'.

Lee, based in London, has worked with orchestras around the world, including the Tokyo Philharmonic and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra.

The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation produced its own version of the hit BBC series “How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria?,” which won the 2007 International Emmy Award for best non-scripted entertainment program.

Each week, contestants performed show tunes in front of a panel of judges that included Lee.

The British version of the show made a star of Connie Fisher, who was chosen to play Maria in the stage production at the London Palladium.
