Investigators analyse black box data

German aviation investigators are beginning to analyse the flight recorders of the two planes that collided over Germany on Monday night, killing 71 people.

The body of the British pilot flying the DHL cargo plane was among the 28 recovered on Tuesday before the search was suspended at dusk.

German officials are also working to fly in relatives of the 52 children who died in the crash.

Russian investigators sent by President Vladimir Putin arrived last night to join the investigation.

The US National Transportation Safety Board says it is sending five investigators at the request of the German authorities.

Captain Phillips, 47, originally from the Liverpool area, was flying the plane from Bahrain to Brussels with a stop in Bergamo, Italy.

The family of his co-pilot, Brant Campioni, say the Canadian often said during his 10 years as a pilot that he would "die happy if he died in the air".

"He always used to say, 'If I die in a plane crash, I'll die happy'," his mother, Gail Campioni, told KIRO-TV of Seattle. "So I guess that's what we have to keep hoping. But it's devastating."

"He loved what he did," his sister, Leslie Dion, told Canadian Press. "He was a super, super guy, very happy."

Campioni, 35, grew up in North Vancouver. He was trained 10 years ago as a pilot at a college in Abbotsford. He flew for Air British Colombia before leaving three years ago to work for DHL in Bahrain.
