A 57-year-old Cobh seaman has been jailed for 15 years, for a series of sexual assaults on three of his nephews when they were young boys.

Patrick Cullen abused the youngsters at his home in Cobh between 1979 and 1986.

Judge Aiden Murphy told the court that this was one of the worst cases he had seen.

He said the man had run a campaign of abuse against the young fellows for a number of years.

He said 57-year-old Cullen had shown not a scintilla of remorse and never since apologised to his victims.

Cullen's nephews Roy Cullen, Eamon Pearse and Richard Pierce told how their lives had been ruined as a result of the abuse when they were aged between 7 and 15 years.

Another man who cannot be named was also abused.

Cullen's three victims announced their satisfaction with the verdict and praised Cobh gardai who, under Sergeant John Quinn, had been investigating the case for three years.
