At least five people died and 20 others were injured today when a bus crashed on a highway in southern Spain, firefighters said.

At least five people died and 20 others were injured today when a bus crashed on a highway in southern Spain, firefighters said.

The accident happened near the town of Lopera in the province of Jaen, some 215 miles south of Madrid when the bus veered off the highway and overturned, said Juan Carlos de Dios, a firefighters’ spokesman, in an interview with private TV station CNN+.

De Dios said the vehicle was 50-seat bus that was covering the route from Madrid to Jerez de la Frontera.

The injured were immediately taken to hospitals in the province and De Dios said firefighters were working to rescue some passengers that were still trapped inside the damaged bus.
