Domestic violence needs to be addressed says CEO of SAFE Ireland

The Government is being criticised for its inaction on domestic violence.

According to the latest SAFE Ireland census, 465 women and 301 children were accommodated by its support services on November 4 last year.

The umbrella body which represents domestic violence support services around the country has said urgent investment is needed to ensure all victims can access help.

CEO of SAFE Ireland Sharon O'Halloran has said there is a lack of political will on the issue.

“I think that it certainly needs stronger political leadership and it needs investment, I mean, we had to look at the fine print of the Budget to see did anything come through for domestic violence,” Ms O’Halloran said.

“In this country we need to see a fundamental culture shift in how we view domestic violence. There was so much in how communities and lives were shattered last week and we cannot allow that to be a situation again.”
