Bertie Ahern is set to become the first Taoiseach in more than three decades to be elected to a second consecutive term in office, according to an opinion poll published this morning.

Fianna Fail has 43% of the committed vote, enough to guarantee 72 Dail seats. However, the poll in the Irish Independent does not have good news for the junior coalition partner.

The Progressive Democrats have just 3% support and only three out of every 10 voters believe the current Government will be returned.

Fine Gael’s share of the committed vote has fallen to a new low of 15%. Labour are on 9%, Sinn Fein are on 4%, Greens and others stand at 3% with 20% of voters undecided.
