Israeli referendum date changed

Israel’s ruling Likud Party decided today to hold its referendum on a Gaza Strip withdrawal plan on May 2, three days later than originally planned.

Israel’s ruling Likud Party decided today to hold its referendum on a Gaza Strip withdrawal plan on May 2, three days later than originally planned.

A key reason for changing the date is a European basketball championship game being held on April 29.

There was concern in the party that the game would keep many voters at home and lower turnout, said party spokesman Shmuel Dahan.
