Fine Gael is due to meet on Friday to discuss the party’s future following its disastrous performance in last week’s general election.
Fine Gael lost more than 20 Dail seats, including those of many prominent front-benchers, prompting party leader Michael Noonan to resign the position he took over just 15 months ago.
The party’s remaining TDs, Senators and MEPs will meet on Friday to elect a new chairperson and to discuss when to hold a vote on a new leader.
This vote is expected to be delayed until after the Senate elections in six weeks’ time, with Michael Noonan expected to remain on as caretaker leader until then.
