Frankie Dettori believes Naheef’s old rival Hawk Wing is the main danger to the Godolphin runner in the Sagitta 2000 Guineas at Newmarket on Saturday.
The Italian was on board Naheef when he was beaten two and a half lengths by Hawk Wing in last season’s Aga Khan Studs National Stakes at the Curragh and the jockey clearly respects the chances of Aidan O’Brien’s colt.
Hawk Wing is as short as 6-4 with Ladbrokes to land the first Classic while Dettori’s mount is a 7-1 chance.
‘‘I ride Naheef in the 2000 Guineas and he’s got a good chance but he’s up against a very good favourite in Hawk Wing,’’ Dettori told the Sunday Mirror.
‘‘He looks fantastic on last year’s form and from what I’ve seen so far he’s the one we all have to beat.
‘‘Hawk Wing beat Naheef over seven furlongs so on last year’s form he’s got more speed than mine.
‘‘Naheef won over a mile in the trial in Dubai by six lengths, so he hasn’t lost that much speed, but he’s more vulnerable over a mile than he will be over further later on.’’
