Representatives of the international meat trade were meeting in Dublin today at the height of Europe’s worst beef shortage in a quarter of a century.
The two-day conference involved buyers from all of the top European supermarket chains – with an estimated total buying power of more than €4bn.
The forum was being organised by Bord Bia.
The beef production shortfall followed the end of a Europe-wide slump in consumption of the meat after fears about its safety over a number of years.
Until now, there has been a general surplus of beef throughout Europe, and the changed situation has been identified as an opportunity for leading producers.
