A toddler was brought back to life more than seven hours after he was discovered face down in a garden pond, it emerged today.

Two-year-old Joe Towey was showing no signs of life when he was pulled out of the water at his Birmingham home and taken to hospital.

The battle to save him is thought to be the longest successful resuscitation carried out in the UK.

Joe was discovered in the pond by his parents, Michael Towey and Jennifer on Boxing Day.

Instructed by emergency staff over the phone they gave the youngster mouth to mouth resuscitation before paramedics arrived and took him to Heartlands Hospital where he was revived.

Mr Towey told the Birmingham Evening Mail: “Joe was dead, he was completely gone.

“But the staff at Heartlands were amazing – they never gave up.

“I don’t know if he survived because of his strength or because he is lucky, but he is back here with us and causing more havoc than normal.”

The youngster has since made a complete recovery and four days ago celebrated the arrival of his brother, baby Jack.
