The death toll from a fire in a Turkish copper mine has now risen to 13 as more bodies have been discovered.

About 30 miners were underground when the fire broke out inside the mine in the town of Kure, 185 miles north of the capital, Ankara.

The blaze was extinguished about four hours after it was sparked by welding inside the mine.

Eight bodies were later pulled out by rescuers who were able to enter the smoke-filled mine only after obtaining gas masks from the military.

Six workers escaped alive – one of whom was injured – and rescuers were continuing efforts to evacuate the others, who had fled to the lower levels more than 490 feet below the surface.
