Kevin Keegan is set to lose Nicky Weaver to injury for a year and has told his chairman he needs to sign fresh goalkeeping cover for David Seaman.
Keegan has confirmed Weaver faces surgery because of the recurrence of a long-term knee injury, leaving the Manchester City boss in a rush to complete either a permanent or loan signing once the January transfer window opens.
“We have to wait to get Nicky to America (for expert medical attention) – but if I am honest we are probably going to have to forget about him for a year,” Keegan told his club’s website www.mcfctv.com.
“He is definitely going to need some sort of operation.
“But we still think that when the operation takes place, which could be in the next three or four weeks, he has a great chance of coming back.”
Weaver’s absence leaves veteran Seaman, Kevin Stuhr-Ellegaard and youngster Kasper Schmeichel as Keegan’s goalkeeping options.
“I have talked with the chairman and he is well aware of the fact that we need to bring a goalkeeper in,” Keegan added.
“Whether that is on loan or a permanent deal, we’ll have to see and we’ll discuss over the next week or two.
“There is also the opportunity to bring someone in if anything were to happen to David (Seaman) again. There is that legislation to help us.”
