The new cabinet has signed off on Fianna Fáil's plans to abolish stamp duty for first-time home-buyers.

The decision was taken during the first meeting of the Fianna Fáil-PD-Green cabinet at Áras an Uachtarain last night

The meeting took place after the new and returning Ministers received their seals of office from the President Mary McAleese.

Speaking afterwards, Minister for Finance and Tánaiste Brian Cowen said the stamp duty reform legislation would be introduced in the coming weeks in line with Fianna Fáil's election commitment.
