Everton manager David Moyes will step up his search for new players today when he arrives back in England from the club’s pre-season trip to Austria.
China World Cup defender Li Weifeng arrives next week on a 12-month loan deal from Shenzhen Pingan.
Moyes has made no secret of the fact he wants a new goalkeeper, with Derby’s Mart Poom top of his list.
However the Scottish boss is anxious to strengthen other departments with the season only weeks away.
Chief executive Michael Dunford said: ‘‘The matter about the goalkeeper will be driven by David Moyes and Bill Kenwright (vice-chairman).
‘‘I am certain one of David’s first phone calls when he arrives back will be to see what progress we are making in respect of strengthening the squad generally.
‘‘It is not just a goalkeeper we are looking at but other positions the manager wishes to improve on.’’
Weifeng’s arrival, subject to a work permit being granted, coincides with Everton sealing a two-year multi-million pound sponsorship deal with Chinese company Kejian.
He played in all three World Cup matches for China after making his name for the Olympic side.
The 27-year-old has won a reputation in China as having sound positional sense and being a good reader of the game.
Everton are also accepting two Chinese players into its Academy in each of the two seasons.
The new deal gives Moyes a vast reservoir of talent to tap into.
Dunford said: ‘‘David is excited about the prospects of Everton genrally. He now has the opportunity to see in his ranks if one of China’s leading defenders will be able to adapt to the rigours of English football.
‘‘There are no guarantees. All we have said is that we will give him the opportunity.
‘‘If he breaks in and establishes himself we will all be delighted. If not we will move on.’’
Weifeng is expected to arrive within the next few days with Everton confident the work permit will be granted.
‘‘As he has played over 60 times for his country, we don’t envisage any problems,’’ said Dunford.
‘‘Hopefully the work permit should be granted within a week to 10 days.’’
Moyes said: ‘‘In many respects China does still represent an un-tapped market in terms of football.
‘‘But hopefully this deal will prove to be of enormous benefit to both Everton and Kejian.
‘‘We are breaking down barriers and opening up football to new audiences.’’
