Ex-England skipper Tony Adams today told of his fear that Sven-Goran Eriksson’s World Cup bid will be wrecked by Steven Gerrard’s absence.

Arsenal centre-back Adams rates midfielder Gerrard as a key component of the national side - but, with the Liverpool man now out of the tournament, he is worried about England’s chances.

‘‘I was very sad to hear about Steven Gerrard,’’ said Adams. ‘‘We need our best players and he’s a fantastic member of the team. If I was England manager, his injury would worry me a great deal.’’
