FG and Labour to tackle Govt on fees

Fine Gael and the Labour Party are expected to launch an attack on the Government's handling of the third-level fees issue in the Dail later today.

Fine Gael and the Labour Party are expected to launch an attack on the Government's handling of the third-level fees issue in the Dail later today.

The opposition parties are expected to accuse the Government of incompetence and inability to make a proper decision following Education Minister Noel Dempsey's u-turn on his plans to re-introduce college fees.

On Sunday, Mr Dempsey announced that he had secured an extra €42m in funding to benefit students from disadvantaged backgrounds and no longer needed to re-introduce fees.

Fine Gael and Labour are expected to ask where this money came from at a time of cutbacks in areas designed to help the disadvantaged.
