The death toll from the accidental explosion of two fuel tank trucks in an Afghan bazaar rose to 50 today.

The tankers blew up on Sunday in the bazaar in Azizabad, a town in Heart province 360 miles west of the capital, Kabul.

The government in Kabul initially said at least 25 people were killed and another 40 injured.

“More people died in hospital because they were very badly burned,” said Ghulam Mohammad Masoum, a spokesman for the Heart provincial government.

Officials said repair work on a gas tanker at a welding shop in the busy bazaar appeared to have triggered the blast.

The explosion engulfed a nearby fuel tanker and a petrol station, destroying nearby shops and cars.
