No panic buys for Wenger

Arsene Wenger declared his faith in his “outstanding” squad as he insisted he would not be forced into the transfer market during the January window.

However, the Arsenal boss, who has been scouring Europe for potential new signings, is ready to splash out if he finds the right player available at the right price.

Wenger has significant funds at his disposal for spend, having missed out on his main summer target Julio Baptista, who moved to Real Madrid instead.

However, while he has been linked with possible interest in forwards Fernando Torres and Dirk Kuijt – among others – the Arsenal boss underlined his faith in his existing players.

Wenger, who signed Jose Antonio Reyes in January 2004 for a fee potentially rising to £17m (€25m) , said: “All I can say at the moment is that we have not had any contact with anybody.

“I look at how well my players are developing and trust my players and that’s the most important thing. If we have to add one or two, then we’ll do it.

“But the most important thing is that, more than ever, it’s time to believe in the squad we have as we have some outstanding quality.”

Despite Wenger’s faith, his team suffered up front in the absence of Thierry Henry with a groin injury earlier this season.

Although Reyes, Robin van Persie and Dennis Bergkamp tried their best to fill the breach, Arsenal simply did not pose the same attacking threat without their captain.

Wenger did not see Chelsea’s defeat at Old Trafford a fortnight ago as he was in Holland to watch Feyenoord, prompting renewed speculation that he was interested in signing Kuijt.

While Chelsea have also been linked with the Holland international forward, Torres has at least indicated that he could be interested in a move to Highbury.

However, when asked if a new signing in January was likely, Wenger told the club’s website, www.arsenal.com: “If I find [the right player] then maybe. But if I don’t, then I don’t mind.”

The Arsenal boss has recently been hit by an injury crisis affecting his left-backs, with Ashley Cole and Gael Clichy both now sidelined with foot problems.

Alexander Hleb, his only major pre-season signing, is also a long-term absentee but it is in attack – as well as central defence – that Wenger most needs extra support.
