A US adoption group has condemned as “despicable” a programme by the Fox network in which a daughter given up for adoption as an infant attempts to guess the identity of her birth father for a €79,600 prize.

Adam Pertman, executive director of research and policy organisation the Evan P Donaldson Adoption Institute, said of Who’s Your Daddy? to be broadcast on January 3: “It takes a deeply personal and important experience and turns it into a money-grabbing game show.

"I think it is despicable.”

But Scott Hallock, one of three executive producers of the series, said: “You might get the impression from the title that it is somehow salacious or exploitive. But nothing could be further from the truth.”
