The Green Party has expressed its support for the idea of an Oireachtas inquiry into the failure of Ireland's banks.

The idea has been mooted by Colm McCarthy, the chairman of An Bord Snip Nua.

Green Party chairman Dan Boyle says the public is owed an explanation about what went wrong with the banking system.

He also says senior bankers need to be held to account for catastrophic failures in their organisations, for which the public will have to pay.
