The company, which manufactures specialist car plants that are exported mainly to Italy and France, has been under pressure for some time from European competitors.

Managing director Patrick D'Helf blamed the closure on soaring production costs at the Wexford plant in recent years.

The American owners of the company, the town’s largest employer, said the plant had become uncompetitive.

Workers at the factory, which has been in Enniscorthy for more than 20 years, were told today that the premises would close in July.
