A light plane crashed into the main shopping street of an Antwerp suburb today, killing the two people on board.

A flying instructor and his student died when the turboprop Tampico plane crashed into two parked cars in Berchem.

No one was injured on the ground said the Belgian city’s police spokesman Fons Bastiaenssens.

He said the crash, just after 9am, came before the street filled with shoppers. Officials commended the pilot for steering the plane away from a nearby farmer’s market.

The aircraft which took off from Antwerp airport crashed 15 minutes after taking off.

Police said the cause of the crash was likely engine failure. The plane made no emergency calls.
