Malta’s deputy prime minister Lawrence Gonzi today claimed victory for the yes vote in his country’s referendum on EU membership, with about 30% of the vote counted.

Malta’s deputy prime minister Lawrence Gonzi today claimed victory for the yes vote in his country’s referendum on EU membership, with about 30% of the vote counted.

Making an announcement on the ruling party’s television station, he said that the yes vote would amount to 52-53% of the vote cast.

Election officials indicated it could be hours, before the official count of the 270,000 votes cast in the non-binding election.
