Shelbourne moved back to the top of the Eircom League Premier Division tonight with a 4-1 home victory over bottom club Dublin City.
Jason Byrne led the way for Shelbourne with a second-half hat-trick but it did not always look so comfortable for the home side with Dublin taking a surprise ninth-minute lead through Adam Rundle.
However, Owen Heary brought Shelbourne back on level terms with the equaliser eight minutes before the break and Byrne put the game beyond the visitors in the second half.
The former Bray Wanderers striker, who was last year’s PFAI Player of the Year, put Shelbourne ahead in the 47th minute, extended the lead to 3-1 two minutes later, and then completed the scoring 15 minutes from time with his third goal of the game.
Shelbourne are now two points clear of second-placed Drogheda United at the top of the table and also have a game in hand.
Dublin remain 11 points adrift at the foot of the standings with 18 points from 26 games.
