A Co Louth man is to be sentenced today for killing a man who was attacked with a machete and dragged along under a car.

Angelo O'Riordan (aged 23) from Point Road, Bellurgan in Dundalk was originally charged with the murder of Aidan Myers at Faughart in December 2006 but a manslaughter plea was accepted mid-trial.

The violent gang attack had no apparent motive.

On the night of his death, Aidan Myers and his friend Gearoid O'Donnell were driving into Dundalk town when their car was rammed from behind by another car.

Four men, two of whom were wielding machetes, set upon the 37-year-old and his friend.

Angelo O'Riordan, who was part of the gang, then got into Mr O’Donnell’s car and drove it over Aidan Myers dragging him along the road for a distance of 50 yards.

The court has heard the accused, who has a string of previous convictions for hit and runs, drugs and dangerous driving, has shown absolutely no remorse.

Aidan Myers' family has asked the judge to impose a sentence today that reflects the violence of the killing.
