A woman has been killed and eight other people injured in a road accident in south Down.

A woman has been killed and eight other people injured in a road accident in south Down.

The accident took place on a dual carriageway two miles north of Newry on the Belfast Road at 9am.

One of the injured is said to be in a serious condition and has been taken to a hospital in Belfast.

The others were taken to Daisy Hill Hospital in Newry.

The woman who was killed was travelling in a car with four other people.

Two of them were in an 'ill but stable' condition this afternoon. An 11-week-old baby is also being kept in for observation.

A total of four vehicles were involved in the collision.
