A man was recovering in hospital in the North today after being shot in what police said appeared to be a paramilitary-style attack.

The 31-year-old was shot in the leg late last night in Strabane, Co Tyrone.

The attack took place in the Springhill Park area of the border town.

The use by paramilitaries of a bullet in the leg as a form of punishment is something that was thought to have died out.

However, there has been a resurgence in recent weeks, with a number of attacks carried out in both republican and loyalist areas across the North.

The wounded man is not thought to be in a serious condition.
