Portugal recieve Figo boost

Host nation Portugal received a boost today when star midfielder Luis Figo returned to training with the rest of the squad.

Host nation Portugal received a boost today when star midfielder Luis Figo returned to training with the rest of the squad.

Figo trained alone yesterday morning as he tried to shake off a leg muscle strain while his team-mates took part in a full training session in the complex at Alcochete on the outskirts of Lisbon.

But the Real Madrid star was back in the fold on Tuesday and now looks likely to be fit for Saturday’s curtain-raiser against Greece.

Portugal team doctor Henrique Jones confirmed: “Figo has trained without any limitations. He complained of a pain in a muscle in his left leg yesterday, which was not a cause for worry at all, but we decided to limit his training.”

Sweden welcome back trio

Sweden welcomed back three of their walking wounded to training today with Freddie Ljungberg, Olof Mellberg and Erik Edman all getting a run-out.

Ljungberg and Mellberg both missed Monday’s session because of respective foot problems while Edman could only manage half an hour before he was forced to stop after feeling faint and tired.

However the trio returned to action on Tuesday, leaving only Mattias Jonson, who is struggling with a cold, and Erik Wahlstedt, who is back in Sweden awaiting the birth of his child, as the only absentees.

Security conscious holders booed on arrival

France touched down in Portugal for the defence of their European crown and were whisked straight off to their team headquarters amid a heavy security presence.

Journalists and children at Porto airport were left disappointed at the measures taken by the French officials.

Les Bleus were on the receiving end of terror threats from Islamic fundamentalists at Euro 2000 and have been accompanied by French Secret Service agents on their travels ever since.

Captain Marcel Desailly was the only member of the party to acknowledge the crowd, but a brief wave did little to stop the booing levelled at Jacques Santini’s star-studded squad.

On a positive note, striker David Trezeguet showed no signs of the ankle injury which had threatened his place against England on Sunday.

Wage demand scuppers Smicer's Lens move

Vladimir Smicer’s agent has scuppered Lens’ hopes of bringing the Czech Republic midfielder back to the Stade Felix-Bollaert from Liverpool.

Smicer spent three successful years at Lens before moving to Anfield in the summer of 1999, and Lens, who finished eighth in Ligue 1, were believed to be keen to take the playmaker back.

But his agent Pavel Paska claimed that Lens could not afford Smicer’s wages.

He said: “I think that the idea of Smicer moving to Lens is a rumour only.

“Lens are not a football club that are able to sign a player like Vladimir Smicer these days; I mean, they do not have enough money to pay him.

“Smicer has a contract at Liverpool and I think that he will honour it.”

U21 duo called in for Croatia

Left winger Danijel Pranjic and central defender Mario Lucic have been drafted into Croatia’s travelling party for the European Championships in Portugal.

Both played at the recent Under-21 European Championship in Germany, but are not included in the official list of 23 players submitted for the tournament.

Pranjic, who plies his trade with NK Osijek, and Lucic of Cibalia Vinkovci could be included if any of the 23 withdraw through injury prior to the tournament.
