Ireland’s coasts and seas need to be better managed, the Heritage Council warns today.

The environmental watchdog outlines in a policy advice document the damage caused to fishing towns and villages from bad planning.

The Heritage Council advises the Government on the identification, protection, preservation and enhancement of the national heritage.

It cautions on the need to put clear planning guidelines in place for all new coastal and off-shore development.

The need to protect marine biodiversity is also highlighted with several examples, including native shellfish stocks, which are seriously in decline.

The policy further outlines steps needed to protect the coastline, ports, marine biodiversity and the threat from flood damage due to climate change.
