A Catholic teenager was in a stable condition in hospital today after being attacked by a mob wielding iron bars and sticks in north Belfast.
The 16-year-old was attacked following clashes between nationalist and loyalist youths in the flashpoint Clifton Park Avenue area.
Police said the assault followed a number of disturbances at both ends of the avenue where a number of cars and houses were attacked.
In a follow-up operation, police searched a house in nearby Avoca Street and seized an item of clothing. So far, there have been no arrests but a spokesman said inquiries were continuing.
Sinn Fein councillor Eoin O’Brion said the trouble began when a loyalist gang entered the nationalist end and began smashing windows.
He added the incident occurred during a street party to launch the Oldpark Fleadh, one of a series of nationalist festivals taking place across the city.
‘‘There was a confrontation and a number of local lads gave chase. He was badly hurt,’’ he said.
‘‘In the light of the festivals taking place this week and next week, I would urge people in nationalist areas to be vigilant,’’ he added.
