The bodies of three people who died in a house in Gurteen, Co Sligo last night have been removed to Sligo General Hospital where post mortem examinations will be carried out.

Gardaí have confirmed the body of the 52-year-old man, his 12-year-old daughter and nine-year-old son were found by a family member in the house shortly after 9.30pm last night.

The children's mother and another daughter were not at home at the time.

It has been reported locally that there may have been a gas leak in the home. Early investigations have also centred on possibilities that the leak may have involved carbon monoxide.

The family are believed to be originally from England and moved into the area some years ago. They had been living in an isolated county council house about one mile from the village of Gurteen.

It is understood the man’s wife is ill in Sligo General Hospital.

Members of the garda technical team carried out a preliminary investigation of the scene earlier today.

Dr Michael Curtis from the State Pathologist's office also carried out initial investigations at the house in Moygara.

Inspector Colm Nevin from Ballymote garda station said gardaí will have further information regarding their investigation after the post mortem examinations are carried out.
