Two Irish men are in a Thai jail cell after their arrest for suspected drug possession at the weekend.

They were among 59 people held after police raided a pub in the southern beach resort of Pattaya on Sunday night.

A Department of Foreign Affairs spokesman confirmed the arrests but would not release names. "We are aware of their arrests and will be offering all appropriate consular assistance," he said.

It is understood the men were arrested on suspicion of possession of "Yaba", an amphetamine derivative, at the Top Secret pub in the resort.

The two Irish men could face five years in jail, or a heavy fine, or both, if found guilty.

If lucky, they could be deported.

Hundreds of people escaped arrest in a stampede for the exit after pepper spray was released into the bar's air conditioning system while the police were testing the urine of about 300 people inside.

Twelve foreigners were among those charged for illegal drug use.
