Sven-Goran Eriksson flies to Germany tomorrow and admits he is “desperate” to complete his final mission for England.
Eriksson was genuinely moved by the ovation he received from fans yesterday after his team hammered Jamaica 6-0 at Old Trafford.
He may be Swedish, he may not beat his chest or rant and rave but he has developed his own connection with the supporters.
When he pulls on his £600 (€874.40) Armani suit and departs Luton Airport for Baden-Baden, it will be a symbolic moment for him.
He leaves as England boss but, when he returns, he will go his own way, unless he has an open-top bus ride to Trafalgar Square first.
Eriksson told his adopted country: “I am desperate to win the trophy for you.
“The support you have given me since my first game in the job has been very special. You have made me feel English. I am proud to wear the Three Lions.”
