Seven more people have died from bubonic plague in Zambia.

Seven more people have died from bubonic plague in Zambia.

The death toll now stands at 18 and the disease is still spreading.

Plague-related hospital admissions stand at 44.

Administrator at Nyanje Hospital, Jack Phiri, says some patients are responding to treatment and will be sent home soon.

Of those admitted to hospital, 31 are children.

A public health spokesman has appealed to people in affected areas not to touch dead rats.

He also urged them to block up holes in their homes. He said if they find any live rats, they should kill and then burn them. They should then seek medical attention, he said.
