Former US congressman Charlie Wilson has died at the age of 76.

Former US congressman Charlie Wilson has died at the age of 76.

Mr Wilson, who represented Texas from 1973 to 1996, was nicknamed "Good Time Charlie" for his party-loving ways.

He was portrayed by Actor Tom Hanks in the 2007 film "Charlie Wilson's War", which documented his efforts to arm the Afghan mujahideen during the 1980s Soviet occupation.

Wilson was taken to hospital after complaining of breathing difficulties at a meeting in Texas today.

He was pronounced dead on arrival.
