O'Neill promises end to uncertainty

Martin O’Neill has promised Celtic supporters a resolution to his contract negotiations.

Martin O’Neill has promised Celtic supporters a resolution to his contract negotiations.

The Parkhead boss’ current deal is due to expire at the end of the season with many fans fearing he could walk away with a move to Leeds again on the agenda.

But with the winter break on the horizon, O’Neill has hinted his contract situation could reach a conclusion before they jet off to their Florida training camp next month.

“Yes, something will be done soon,” said O’Neill. “It will be (concluded) honestly, I promise you.”

O’Neill hopes to wrap up the first half of the campaign with three victories to keep the pressure on Premier League leaders Rangers.

Their arch rivals are four points clear with three games left before the shutdown, but the Celtic boss is far from panicking at their current predicament.

“We are not a million miles away and everything at this minute is still is in our own hands,” said O’Neill.

“We have to try and keep winning but it was the same last season.

“Even when we were in front, we generally had to win the games to stay there so it’s no different.

“I would prefer to be in front than behind but we’ve got to make sure we win the games to stay in touch.”

Rangers were fortunate to come from behind to beat Partick Thistle on Sunday despite being below their best.

But midfielder Alan Thompson is refusing to press the panic button with still many games to go.

“If we were five or six points behind going into the winter break then that would not be so good,” said Thompson.

“If we can shorten the gap to one, two or three points then that would be a big bonus for us because there’s still a lot of football to be played.

“It is a new experience for many of the lads here but we’ve been off the top before and we know what it’s like at previous clubs so it’s up to us to change it around.

“You’ve got to give credit to Rangers for their win at Partick on Sunday.

“They didn’t play at their best but they got the result which you have to do. That’s what we’ve done over the previous two seasons.”

Thompson is confident Rangers will slip up before the end of the season.

“It’s not possible to win every game and that’s what we are clinging to,” said Thompson.

But the former Bolton man insists the Hoops must also be wary of dropping points with in-form Hearts next to visit Parkhead.

“I’m sure they will be hoping to come and possibly nick a point, but it’s up to us to make sure they don’t,” said Thompson.

“I’m sure our manager will say to us that people will be wanting us to win four or five nil, but he will say just win the game.

“The most important thing for us is to win the game and if we score in the last two minutes then so be it.

“Three points are three points whether you have played out a 1-0 win or a 5-0.

“It’s difficult because teams do totally change things, especially when they face the Old Firm.

“Hearts will come and give it a serious go so we need to be ready.”
