Romanian border police confiscated passports from more than 3,000 returning citizens who worked illegally in the European Union or stayed there longer than legally allowed, authorities said today.

Romanian border police confiscated passports from more than 3,000 returning citizens who worked illegally in the European Union or stayed there longer than legally allowed, authorities said today.

Romania wants to join the 25-nation union in 2007 and one condition is reducing illegal immigration and strengthening border controls.

Border police have seized passports from 3,114 Romanians since August 1, when they began enforcing a rule that limits stays in Western Europe to 90 days, the Interior Ministry said in a statement.
