Justice Minister Michael McDowell is due to announce details today of a multi-million euro funding package for childcare services throughout the country.

Justice Minister Michael McDowell is due to announce details today of a multi-million euro funding package for childcare services throughout the country.

The move is being interpreted as an attempt by Fianna Fáil and the Progressive Democrats to address widespread public anger over the lack of childcare places ahead of the next election.

Reports this morning said the funding would be used to encourage parents and community groups to set up non-profit after-school childcare services in school buildings.

This proposal was initially mooted at the PDs' annual conference earlier this year.
