A partially-constructed building collapsed in New York today, injuring at least four people.
More than 100 firefighters rushed to the scene on Manhattan’s Upper West Side and were searching for people trapped in the wreckage.
A New York Fire Department spokesman said: “At this stage we don’t know whether it was being constructed or demolished.
“There was a lot of scaffolding involved but we are still trying to determine what has happened and whether there is anyone trapped under the rubble.”
As a rescue operation was mounted, some 46 people were removed from the scene. One witness claimed to have seen a baby being taken away.
The four injured were taken to St Luke’s Hospital.
Several underground stations in the area were closed.
