Residents of Clontarf in Dublin have succeeded in their campaign to block proposed flood defence plans for the area.
Dublin City Councillors last night voted to reject plans to build a flood defence wall along the Clontarf Promenade, which would have reached seven feet in places.
The decision comes after thousands of locals held protests in recent weeks.
Labour Party Councillor Jane Horgan-Jones said that she and her fellow Councillors hope that local residents and businesses will be involved in the consultation process for the new plans.
"It will take some time because the proper consultation process does, by its nature, take some time, but hopefully it will be done properly this time, and at the end of the day we'll have a flood plan that the community support and can protect the community of Clontarf, of which I'm a member, from the flood risk that exists," she said.
