Irish debit retail transactions show three-fold increase

Irish retail consumers are now purchasing goods primarily with debit cards and the popularity of "plastic purchasing" is ever increasing.

Debit card transactions are increasing more than three times faster than overall retail spending.

They are used one hundred and thirty times every minute, and this will account for €4.8bn in sales by the end of the year.

Jennifer Chamberlain from Laser Card Services says shoppers like the convenience of cards over cash.

"People go into shops and use their laser cards to buy things and they don't have to make a separate trip to the ATM," she said.

"Also there is just one transaction charge when people use laser and people can get cash back as well.

"Cash back is available from over 40% of retailers at the moment.''
