Irish 15-year-olds have a higher standard of reading compared to their counterparts in other developed nations, according to a study carried out by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.

The Irish teenagers were ranked sixth out of the 29 OECD countries when it came to reading, although this is down from fifth place in the last study carried out four years ago.

However, Ireland's 15-year-olds only ranked 17 of the 29 OECD countries when it came to maths skills and 13th when it came to science skills, which is largely the same as the results of the 2000 study.
