England's hopes of World Cup qualification were handed a major boost when group nine leaders Germany were held to a 2-2 draw in Helsinki.

Chelsea striker Mikael Forssell struck twice for the Finns in the first half to threaten Germany's 100 per cent record in the group.

But Rudi Voller's men hit back with two goals in four second-half minutes.

Michael Ballack made no mistake with a 68th minute penalty and a thunderous drive from Carsten Jancker gave Germany a point.

Germany are now six points clear of second-placed England but have played one game more.
