Patrick Ewing has announced his retirement from basketball after a 17-year career.

The 40-year-old will join the Washington Wizards as assistant coach, working alongside Michael Jordan.

Ewing, an 11-time All-Star, was chosen as one of the 50 best players in league history.

He spent 15 years with the New York Knicks, averaging 22.8 points and 10.4 rebounds and accumulated 24,815 points and 11,606 rebounds during his NBA career.

"It's time to move on," Ewing said. "It was a great ride. I'm sorry I couldn't bring a championship here."
