Ulster Unionist leader David Trimble is to meet the Taoiseach Bertie Ahern today as part of efforts to restore devolved government in Northern Ireland.

This afternoon’s talks at the Dail were taking place as political parties await a package from the Taoiseach and British Prime Minister Tony Blair next month.

The meeting is one of a series between parties since the crucial Hillsborough Castle talks failed to reach agreement on all sides.

The two leaders are due to present a new set of proposals next month in the hope that Assembly elections can take place at the end of May.

An Irish government spokeswoman said Mr Trimble was expected to brief the media after today’s 4.30pm meeting.
